Fed: Case reflects poorly on govt's workplace laws - Labor

The Labor party says the fact a woman had to apply to the courts to establish her rightto part-time work after maternity leave, reflects poorly on the federal government's workplacelaws.

Opposition workplace relations spokesman CRAIG EMERSON says working mothers are cryingout for better access to part-time work after maternity leave.

Dr EMERSON was referring to the ruling in the Magistrates Court yesterday in whichthe Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) was found to have donelittle to find part-time work for employee SAMANTHA MAYER after she returned from maternityleave.

Dr EMERSON says Labor is calling on the government to modernise workplace laws to helpworkers balance their work and family responsibilities.

He says Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD and Workplace Relations Minister TONY ABBOTT are out of touch.
