Vic: Child molester priest gets suspended jail sentence
A Melbourne Catholic priest who pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting a 15-year-old
boy has walked free after being handed a suspended jail sentence.
County Court Judge FRED DAVEY has told 71-year-old JOHN BARRY GWILLIM, of Coburg, that
nothing would be gained by sending him to jail.
GWILLIM pleaded guilty to five counts of indecent assault and four of gross indecency
between October 1979 and February 1981.
Judge DAVEY noted that GWILLIM continued on friendly terms with his victim and, later
the man's children, long after the offences.
He's handed GWILLIM a suspended two-year-eight-month jail term.
